For many in the northern hemisphere, winter brings less-than-ideal cold weather: frigid temperatures, snow, rain and other chilling conditions make daily life bleak. However, those looking to escape these icy climates have many options available to them. Countries in Southeast Asia, South and Central America, and Africa provide a warm getaway rampant with tropical weather, beach relaxation and adventures that will make any visitor forget the cold.

1. The Philippines

Found in the western Pacific Ocean, this Southeast Asian country is home to numerous cities that experience warm climates, with tropical temperatures ranging from 74 F to 89 F during the winter. Destinations across the country offer different experiences for travelers of all kinds, from adventure to beach relaxation.

One such spot is Cebu, a long narrow island home to the vibrant Visayan-Cebuano culture, the second-largest ethnolinguistic group in the Philippines. The province is filled with rich marine life and beautiful nature trails, making for exciting snorkeling, scuba diving and hiking adventures. For sightseers, Davao City in the southern Philippines showcases remarkable natural attractions and local wildlife, like UNESCO World Heritage site Mount Apo and Eden Nature Park. Lastly, the island of Siargao is perfect for beachgoers and surfers. This region may be much smaller than other islands in the country, but its famous Cloud 9 surf spot and Doot Beach present a perfect opportunity for relaxation.

2. Thailand

Traveling further west, Thailand spans from mainland Southeast Asia down to its narrow southern peninsula. Here, where temperatures range from 71 F to 92 F, one can experience various excursions and activities, such as learning about the country's history or simply taking a restful beach day.

Inland, Thailand’s rich history and culture may be found in the urban city of Chiang Mai. Travelers can walk through the streets of the old city, finding stretches of small boutiques, coffee shops and temples where they can eat local food and learn about local traditions. On the coast, December to March marks Phuket's dry season, characterized by breezy, calm seas. As the largest island in Thailand, Phuket is home to stunning coastlines, with stops such as Freedom Beach, where one can swim among sea life. From Phuket or other nearby cities like Krabi, one can also take a day trip by ferry to the Phi Phi Islands to walk along white sand beaches and tour famous spots. One such location is Maya Bay, popularized by the 2000 film “The Beach,” which has recently reopened after being closed for conservation.

3. Puerto Rico

South of the continental United States, Puerto Rico is a self-governing island in the West Indies. During winter, the country receives small amounts of rain and sunny days.

The 500-year-old capital of San Juan is Puerto Rico’s center for local history and culture. In the old town, one can wander through old cobblestone streets while gazing across hundreds of restored buildings, offering a unique look into the past. Visitors often take day trips from San Juan, traveling to the tropical islands of Vieques and Culebra by plane or ferry. Located off the east coast of Puerto Rico, Vieques harbors a vast natural beauty where horses run wild. The island is also home to Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Even more quaint, the island of Culebra does not contain any major hotels, fast-food restaurants or overcrowded tourist areas, favoring a remote atmosphere. It is also known for its horseshoe-shaped bay Flamenco Beach

4. Mexico

Mexico offers a place close to home for North Americans looking to escape the January chill. Packed with ancient ruins, delicious spiced cuisine and tropical beaches, travelers can encounter various experiences during their time here.

In southwestern Mexico lies the city of Oaxaca, one of the most ethnically diverse states in the country with a concentration of 16 different Indigenous groups. In addition to learning about local history, travelers can also experience lively markets and regular festivals. Neighboring coastal port town Puerto Escondido appeals to surfers worldwide, with winter water conditions being perfect for beginners. Unique beach activities, such as a baby turtle release, invite visitors of all ages to lend a hand in helping the environment. Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula has a dry season during the winter months as well. Good weather eases travel to regional towns, such as Merida, a 16th-century Spanish base, or Tulum, a picturesque and coastal city.

The quiet beach town of Samara is a favorite among visitors, ideal for relaxing and exploring. From here, tourists can take a drive to La Roca Waterfall to hike around the area to take in breathtaking views. Travelers desiring to discover plant and animal diversity can also take wildlife and nature tours on kayaks around the coast. Going east, one can explore more of inland Costa Rica by visiting towns like La Fortuna, surrounded by natural attractions like the Arenal Volcano and nearby hot springs. Those interested in experiencing more of the local Afro-Caribbean culture can travel south to Puerto Viejo, where Costa Rican and Jamaican influences create a cultural fusion in unique cuisine and local festivals.

Travelers who want a bustling city with tropical weather can look to Cape Town. South Africa’s capital and oldest city, the town holds some of the country’s most important history and culture. Numerous museums throughout the city, such as the Slave Lodge Museum and the District Six Museum, give an in-depth look into South Africa’s past, as well as an exploration of the country’s current conditions. The town of Durban, known for its bustling port, will attract foodies with its famous Indian food and bunny chow. The city is also marked by beach landscapes and shopping on the Golden Mile, a popular coastal stretch in South Africa.
